Hanwha TotalEnergies Petrochemical has taken its sizable Paraxylene (PX) production unit at Daesan offline for a scheduled maintenance turnaround that began in early August 2025, with operations expected to resume by the end of September 2025. The outage affects a facility with an annual production capacity of 1.26 million metric tons, a significant portion of the company’s aromatics output.
This temporary shutdown comes as South Korea’s petrochemical sector continues to grapple with oversupply and flagging demand in the downstream markets. Hanwha TotalEnergies, positioned among the nation’s leading producers, joins other major players navigating structural headwinds in the chemical space.
While Daesan’s integrated complex remains a strategic asset, built upon decades of investments and upgrades to reinforce capacity across ethylene, propylene, and polymer production, the PX unit’s offline status may tighten paraxylene availability, potentially influencing nearby markets and supply contracts.
