In a groundbreaking move for sustainable materials, Vioneo has awarded ECI Group a major contract to build the world’s first low-density polyethylene (LDPE) plant that will operate entirely on fossil-free feedstock.
Located in Antwerp, this pioneering facility will harness ECI Group’s advanced autoclave technology to produce 110,000 tonnes per year of LDPE derived from certified green methanol, a feedstock originating from biogenic CO₂, making the product fully traceable, ISCC PLUS-certified, and fossil-free.
This initiative is backed by A.P. Moller Holding and includes support from Repsol as a strategic product partner, bringing deep expertise in polymers to the table.
Joaquin Flores, President and CEO of ECI Group, hailed the project as “a perfect alignment with our mission to deliver technology that drives sustainable innovation… the first new autoclave LDPE plant built in Europe in forty years.”
For Vioneo, this plant marks a pivotal step toward de-fossilising the plastic industry. According to CEO Alex Hogan, the project demonstrates “the economic viability of large-scale, cleaner production using green methanol instead of fossil fuels,” positioning Europe to lead the €5 trillion chemicals and materials sector’s green transformation.
In collaboration, ECI Group’s HPPE (High-Pressure Polyethylene) technology offers unparalleled operational efficiency, reliability, and flexibility, built on decades of polymer engineering know-how.
