BASF Prepares October Maintenance Shutdown at Antwerp Ethanolamines Plant

BASF is planning a maintenance turnaround at its ethanolamines facility in Antwerp, Belgium, that will take the unit offline for several weeks later this year, according to market sources familiar with the operation.

A contact in Belgium said the shutdown is expected to begin in the first half of October 2025 and continue until the first half of November. “The company is expected to shut the plant for a maintenance turnaround from the first half of October 2025 until the first half of November 2025. The exact shutdown and restart dates could not be ascertained, with no confirmation forthcoming from an authorized representative,” the source explained.

The Antwerp unit, with a production capacity of about 110,000 metric tons per year, is a significant European source of ethanolamines, which are used in applications ranging from detergents and personal care products to gas treatment and agricultural chemicals. Traders and downstream manufacturers are monitoring the situation closely, as any extended outage could tighten regional availability and influence spot pricing across multiple end-use markets.

Market participants noted that stable feedstock supply and alternative production within Europe may help offset immediate disruptions, but they cautioned that any delay beyond the planned schedule could heighten price volatility, particularly if demand strengthens during the autumn months.
