Mumbai-headquartered Supreme Petrochem Ltd (SPL), India’s leading polystyrene producer and exporter, has made a bold entry into engineering plastics with the commissioning of its first ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) production line. Located at the Amdoshi plant in Nagothane, Maharashtra, the new unit boasts an annual capacity of 70,000 tonnes and officially began operations on September 25, 2025. The launch was supported by a technical partnership with Italy’s Versalis.
On the same day, SPL also activated a 20,000-tonne-per-year ABS compounding facility at the site, enabling the company to deliver finished formulations more efficiently to market.
This dual commissioning marks a pivotal milestone in SPL’s strategy to reduce India’s reliance on ABS imports and align with the national “Make in India” initiative. Historically, domestic ABS demand has been heavily import-dependent, a gap SPL now aims to close.
The ABS initiative is part of a broader plan to build a 140,000 TPA mass ABS capacity, split into two phases of 70,000 tonnes each. With Phase I now operational, Phase II is expected to follow in due course.
Simultaneously, SPL is advancing a major expansion in Haryana, having acquired 96 acres of land. The upcoming facility will manufacture polystyrene, expandable polystyrene (EPS), and downstream products such as PS sheeting and 3D panels. This project will unfold in phases over the next three to four years.
Financed through internal accruals, SPL’s expansion underscores its commitment to deepening its footprint across the styrenics and polymer value chain.
Investor sentiment has responded positively: SPL’s stock rose approximately 4% on the Bombay Stock Exchange following the ABS compounding line’s commissioning.
While SPL has long dominated the PS and EPS segments, its move into ABS positions the company squarely within the engineering polymers space, where demand from consumer goods, electronics, and automotive sectors is poised to drive future growth.
