Celanese Expected to Restart Acetic Acid Unit in Singapore by October After Maintenance Shutdown

Celanese Corporation is reportedly preparing to bring its acetic acid unit in Pulau Sakra, Singapore, back online in the coming weeks, according to market sources. The facility, which has a nameplate capacity of 600,000 metric tons per year, was taken offline in mid-August 2025 for scheduled maintenance.

An industry source familiar with the matter told that the restart is targeted for the first half of October 2025. “The company plans to resume operations at the unit by the first half of October 2025. The unit had been shut down for maintenance in mid-August 2025. However, no confirmation was obtained from an authorized representative,” the source said, emphasizing that the information has yet to be officially verified by Celanese.

The Pulau Sakra site is a strategically important facility for the company, supplying acetic acid for both regional and global markets. Market participants are closely monitoring the restart timeline, as the return of volumes could ease supply concerns in Asia, where buyers have been adjusting procurement strategies during the downtime.

Industry observers note that Celanese’s restart comes at a time when Asian acetic acid markets have been experiencing mixed trends, shaped by feedstock volatility and variable demand across downstream applications. The return of a major producer’s capacity is likely to play a significant role in setting the tone for near-term market dynamics.
