European Ethylene Price Slips €5 as Demand Diminishes, Asia Remains Stable

European ethylene prices saw a mild decline on Tuesday amid persistent weakness in downstream demand, while Asian markets held firm, reflecting divergent regional dynamics.

Industry sources reported that CIF NWE ethylene prices in Europe dropped by USD 5/mt, settling at USD 820–830/mt CIF NWE, signaling cautious market sentiment as buyers remain wary of overstocking amid abundant supply and uncertain fundamentals. Meanwhile, FD NWE ethylene assessments in Europe remained unchanged at €720–730/mt.

In parallel, Asia’s ethylene market maintained stability. CFR North East Asia prices were stable at USD 815–825/mt, and CFR South East Asia remained flat at USD 825–835/mt, consistent with prior assessments.

A European industry source explained the downward movement: “Subdued demand and stable material availability prompted caution from buyers, who preferred to monitor short- to medium-term fundamentals before committing to new purchases.”

The contrast underscores a broader European fragility, where soft downstream momentum and steady supply continue to pressure prices downward. In Asia, by contrast, ethylene fundamentals remain balanced, with flat pricing reflecting a lack of volatility rather than interactions with broader demand shifts.
