Evonik has officially inaugurated Asia’s first world-scale alkoxides facility on Jurong Island, Singapore, a development that marks a pivotal step in its global catalyst strategy and reinforces its long-term commitment to the region.
The plant, which carries an annual production capacity of 100,000 metric tons, represents a mid-double-digit-million-euro investment first announced in May 2023. Built to the highest safety and environmental standards, the facility is capable of operating with net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions, aligning with Evonik’s corporate sustainability ambitions.
Strategically located in Southeast Asia, the new site enables faster response times and improved supply security for regional customers. Industries set to benefit include biodiesel, pharmaceuticals, and chemical recycling—sectors where demand for alkoxides is rising sharply. “This facility is more than just an expansion—it’s a statement of our long-term commitment to Asia,” said Lauren Kjeldsen, Chief Operating Officer, Custom Solutions. “By producing closer to our customers, we enhance supply security and agility, while also contributing to Singapore’s vision for a sustainable chemical industry.”
The inauguration was marked by a ceremony attended by Grace Fu, Singapore’s Minister for Sustainability and the Environment and Minister-in-Charge of Trade Relations. Minister Fu praised the project’s on-schedule and on-budget delivery, adding that Evonik’s investment reflected confidence in Singapore’s role as a hub for specialty chemicals.
The Jurong Island plant completes Evonik’s global alkoxides production network, which now spans Germany, the U.S., Argentina, and Singapore, creating a truly global supply chain capable of serving local market needs with speed and precision.
Alkoxides play a crucial role in the production of sustainable biodiesel from vegetable oils, used cooking oils, and fat-based waste, optimizing processes for maximum yield. They are also widely used in the life sciences industry for synthesizing active ingredients and fine chemicals, further underlining their importance across multiple value chains.
With this launch, Evonik not only strengthens its foothold in Asia but also consolidates its position as a global leader in specialty catalysts, ensuring its customers gain reliable access to materials critical for both industrial innovation and the transition to more sustainable production systems.
