Hengli Petrochemical has reportedly shut down its purified terephthalic acid (PTA) facilities in Huizhou, China, following technical complications that surfaced earlier this week.
According to a Polymerduniya source, the company halted operations on August 21, 2025, though the precise timeline for resumption remains uncertain. “The company is heard to have shut its units due to technical issues. The expected duration of the shutdown remains unclear, and the information could not be independently confirmed with an authorized source,” the source said.
The Huizhou complex houses two PTA units with a combined nameplate capacity of 5 million mt/year, positioning it among the largest PTA production sites in Asia. Any prolonged outage at a facility of this scale could have implications for regional PTA supply dynamics, particularly at a time when downstream polyester demand is already fragile and margins for both fiber and resin producers remain under pressure.
Market watchers noted that while overall availability in China is currently adequate, an extended shutdown could tighten spot liquidity if buying interest strengthens ahead of the peak polyester production season in Q4. Traders are closely monitoring whether the outage will disrupt term supply commitments or force Hengli to adjust export volumes.
The lack of clarity over the duration of the shutdown has left the market cautious, with participants awaiting official confirmation from Hengli Petrochemical. Until then, sentiment is expected to remain watchful, with potential ripple effects on both domestic Chinese PTA pricing and broader Asian polyester feedstock markets.
