Shandong Yulong Petrochemical Shuts No.3 Polypropylene Unit Again After Brief Restart

Activity at one of China’s major polypropylene facilities has come to a halt once more. According to market information, Shandong Yulong Petrochemical has taken its No.3 polypropylene (PP) unit offline only days after bringing it back into operation.

Sources in China report that the company shut the unit around September 18, 2025, following a short restart on September 15 after a scheduled maintenance turnaround. The reasons behind the latest shutdown have not been confirmed, and the expected duration remains uncertain. Efforts to obtain a statement from an authorized company representative were unsuccessful, leaving industry observers to speculate on whether technical issues or operational constraints prompted the sudden pause.

The No.3 PP unit, located in Yantai in China’s Shandong province, has a nameplate capacity of 400,000 metric tons per year and is considered an important supplier to downstream plastic processing industries. Its stop-and-start pattern over the past week has drawn attention from traders and converters who depend on steady polypropylene availability for packaging and automotive applications.

Market participants will be watching closely for updates, as any extended outage at a plant of this size can influence local supply and pricing, particularly if other regional producers are operating near full capacity. Until the company provides clarity on the length and cause of the shutdown, uncertainty is likely to persist in the Chinese polypropylene market.
