SIG has just achieved a major sustainability milestone: its Terra RecShield BD bag-in-box packaging, incorporating the industry-leading Terra FlexTap, has become the first wine packaging solution from SIG to be formally recognized by the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) for meeting the highest criteria of recyclability under the APR Design® Guide.
This validation was secured through APR’s most stringent recyclability assessment, the Critical Guidance Protocol (FPE-CG-01 Path 1A), a mark of excellence in recyclability design in North America.
SIG’s Terra RecShield BD wine solution now joins its Terra portfolio alongside the water-focused Terra RecShield PE-42B (recognized in 2021) and Terra RecShield D for post-mix syrup (recognized in 2024), all part of the company’s continued push toward sustainable, circular packaging.
Teresa Bernal-Lara, Ph.D., Global Head of Film Development, celebrated the engineering feat: “Wine brings unique packaging challenges, balancing oxygen barrier, dispensing ease, and durability, in a recyclable format. With Terra RecShield BD, we’ve crafted a recycle-ready laminate that stands up to those demands and proves that even high-function barrier packaging can be circular by design”.
Jami Leveen, Head of Sustainability at SIG North America, added that this achievement underscores the company’s commitment to offering sustainable performance-packaging: “We’re showing that sustainability and reliability can go hand in hand,” she said.
By earning APR recycling validation while maintaining superior protection and functionality, SIG’s wine bag-in-box paves a new path toward performance-driven, sustainable packaging.
